We'll come sit with eskies if Lunatic closes: locals
DRAKE residents are devastated the village's only pub is on the brink of closing.
If the Kane couple can't sell, the Lunatic Hotel will close its doors next month.
To try to prevent the closure, a Facebook page called Save Lunatic Hotel -Drake has been started.
Brian Skelton highlighted the hotel's reputation as a fundraising hotspot.
"I am devastated to hear of Bob and Desley's decision to walk away from this situation," he said on the page.
"Please, please stay and keep your hotel alive and open.
"The Drake community, a lot of charities and clubs will suffer greatly if this was to happen."
The hotel's first publican after it was built in 1988, Guy Brien, weighed into the debate.
"As the first publican of the Lunatic Hotel (then the Drake Hotel)I saw a wide variety of personalities, backgrounds and interests band together and achieve great friendships and community support," he said. "The local families have used the hotel as a hub, not only to drink at but to share in social and sporting activities and this would be sadly missed if it was to close."
"I think this place is awesome, (has) friendly staff and (is) a top place to stop," Peter Needham posted. "Why do people want to stop something that brings money to their town?"
If someone doesn't buy the hotel, local people including Steve Wade said they would use the facilities.
"If the pub shuts we will still come and sit at the tables with our eskies," he said.
Rural Fire Service volunteer Paul Botting said he experienced the hospitality of the hotel during a fire.
"Been on the fire line and the Lunatic Hotel fed us all ... there must have been 40-plus hot meals sent out," he posted. "That was just one fire. Thank you."
