Fight night a big hit

BOXING enthusiasts turned out in large numbers to watch several amateur pugilists go around in the ring at Lismore Workers Club on Saturday night. And those fight fans weren't disappointed.

The bouts, featuring regional boxers and visiting opponents from Queensland, featured all the trademarks of amateur boxing with several developing youngsters stepping up and giving a good account of themselves.

Among them was Lismore's Shelley Watts, who no doubt would have been heartened with her efforts after going the distance with two-time Australian champion Jessica Retallack of Noosa.

In one of the other fights, Billy Robinson conceded 4kg to Simon Cooper, the recently crowned Australian Golden Gloves champion, in the light-heavyweight division but Robinson stood fast and was unlucky to lose in a close points decision.
