Ferdinand cops coin to the face during match against City
MANCHESTER United defender Rio Ferdinand was left with blood pouring from a cut above his left eye after being hit by a coin thrown from the crowd as the Manchester derby ended in disgrace.
United's 3-2 win over City moved them six points clear at the top and ended their bitter rivals' two-year unbeaten home run in the EPL.
It also sparked further criticism of City coach Roberto Mancini who elected to start with controversial striker Mario Balotelli instead of Carlos Tevez.
But the game won't be remembered only for the football - the ugly scenes that followed Robin van Persie's extra time winner ensured that.
The situation could have been even worse had City goalkeeper Joe Hart not stopped another pitch-invading fan from confronting Ferdinand.
City issued an immediate apology to Ferdinand, but both the police and the FA have launched investigations into the incidents.
Elsewhere, it was a great day for Merseyside supporters as Liverpool won 3-2 at West Ham, and Everton beat Tottenham 2-1 at Goodison Park.
