Federer close to claiming 900 match wins in tennis career

ROGER Federer is two wins away from becoming just the fourth male player to win 900 matches in the modern era - joining legends of the game in Jimmy Connors (1243), Ivan Lendl (1071) and Guillermo Vilas (923).

But after brushing aside India's Somdev Devvarman 6-2 6-1 6-1 in the second round, the Swiss maestro said he would take nothing for granted against Frenchman Julian Benneteau in tonight's third round match.

Benneteau has a surprisingly good record against the No.2 seed, having taken a two-set lead against Federer last year at Wimbledon before going out in five, then beating him at Rotterdam earlier this year.

"It's true when I play against him he makes it difficult for me," Federer said.

"I have some problems and I have to find a solution."

Australia's challenge in the men's draw ended in the second round with 18-year-old Nick Kyrgios bundled out 6-4 6-2 6-2 by big-serving Croatian Marin Cilic.

Krygios, who won the Australian Open junior title in January, is likely to play in the junior singles at Roland Garros despite suffering what appeared to be a hamstring injury early in the second set against Cilic.
