Federal government gives EDO $300,000 after NSW’s big cut

AFTER having their funding slashed by $400,000 last year by the O'Farrell government, the EDO (Environmental Defenders Office) has welcomed an additional $300,000 from the Federal Attorney-General's office.

EDO principal solicitor Sue Higginson said it would allow them to re-assess operations in Lismore after a position was cut last year.

"Lismore is very much the jewel in the crown of our outreach work and we will assess what we can do," she said.

The EDO provides free legal advice to landowners and community groups but last year was accused by NSW Energy Minister Chris Hartcher of being part of "a leftist agenda to destroy the economy" for their work with groups opposed to coal projects and CSG projects.

EDO NSW executive director Jeff Smith said they were "extremely grateful" for the federal money.

"The Australian Government have recognised the valuable work that EDO NSW does to protect the environment under law and ensure informed community participation in planning and environmental decision making processes," he said.

"The additional funding will bolster our ability to provide independent legal advice and representation, policy advice, scientific expertise, and educational outreach on environmental matters across the length and breadth of our state."

Page MP Janelle Saffin welcomed the funding, saying the EDO provided "a great service to the community, particularly farmers".
