Favourite Porte moves into Tour Down Under lead

CYCLING: Australian favourite Richie Porte has conquered Paracombe to record a thrilling win in the second stage of the 2017 Santos Tour Down Under.

BMC's Porte broke away late, then burnt Movistar's Gorka Izaguirre, who took second place ahead of Orica-Scott's Esteban Chaves.

In a race with just one breakaway - Movistar's Jasha Sutterlin - it all came down to the gut-wrenching push up Paracombe Rd.

And when Porte went, nobody could stay with him.

Earlier Sutterlin took advantage of his long-running breakaway to take the second intermediate sprint of the day along Longwood Rd, Heathfield.

He crossed a lot earlier than the second and third-placed BORA-hansgrohe riders Michael Kolar and Rudiger Selig.

In the first sprint, UAE Abu Dhabi's British rider Ben Swift was first, followed by Aussie Jay McCarthy (BORA-hansgrohe) and Lotto-Soudal's Sean De Bie, from Belgium.
