Fatal crash triggers traffic jams

A SPRINGROVE man was killed when his motorbike and a car crashed head-on just outside Lismore yesterday.

The crash happened about 2.50pm on Bangalow Road at the Lagoon Grass Bridge, in an area surrounded by farmland.

It triggered big traffic jams as far away as Ballina Road, as parents struggled to pick up children from school.

Richmond Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Bill McKenna said the Springrove man, 49, died at the scene.

The car's driver and passenger were treated for shock and were taken to Lismore Base Hospital for further assessment.

With Bangalow Road blocked off from the Donnans Road and Brunswick Street junction in the south, after school traffic was banked up in Dawson Street in the central business district.

From the north, the Bruxner Highway at Goonellabah also experienced traffic delays as cars were diverted from Bangalow Road at the Boatharbour Road intersection.

Traffic flow was back to normal when Bangalow Road was reopened at approximately 5pm.

The scene was attended by Lismore police with the Ballina crash investigation unit and local fire brigade.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
