FASHION: How to wear denim this winter

LAST year I lived in Vancouver, Canada, and found out more about casual dressing using denim. Double denim, also known as the Canadian Tuxedo, is the pairing of denim jeans and jackets.

I found myself lost in local vintage shops looking for original pieces from the '70s, '80s and '90s. After all, the best denim has already been worn in.

This season we are seeing this fabric being dressed up and down.

For jeans, festival styles reminiscent of Woodstock are on trend, in boot cut, cropped or flared, and designed with high-low slit hemlines.

Jeans that were once a wardrobe basic are now the focal point of an outfit in patterned and pinstriped fabrics.

Stretching your comfort zone, this season's denim explosion means chic styling of tops, skirts and dresses are on offer. Denim tops adorned with embroidery can be paired with fitted skirts. You may feel as though you are in a 1990s music video.

Dungarees or overalls have been revived, and it is fully acceptable to see a grown woman in "all in one denim'', achieving smart causal dress in the process. Denim overcoats and light dresses optimise casual office Friday, modernised by highlights tailoring and a feminine silhouette.

The denim-on-denim look is a chance to experiment with colour, texture and shape.

Remember, you can't get a wrong pairing. Fresh off the rack or found in a vintage shop, denim is nostalgic and reminds me of that summer in Canada.
