Family heirlooms, war medals recovered by police

A COLLECTION of medals from the Great War and World War Two are amongst valuable items recovered and police are now searching for their owners.

Richmond Police District Crime Prevention Officer, Senior Constable David Henderson, said the items were seized in Lismore on December 4.

"Police believe they may be stolen," he said.

"These items are undoubtedly valued family heirlooms - the Military Cross is only awarded for acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy."

Snr Const Henderson said the items comprised a Military Cross Medal in Royal Mint case, a Vintage 1937 King Edward 8th coronation medallion, a 60th Anniversary End of World War II For Australian service 1945-2005 Medallion, 14 antique spoons in display cases, two antique display spoons (not in cases), three antique cutlery sets, one antique purse containing a coin collection of various currencies.

He said the theft of these items had not been reported to police.

Lismore RSL Sub-Branch secretary Cecil Harris, said all medals issued should carry the serial number and the name of the recipient on the side of the item.

"Many recipients choose to wear replicas and keep their originals which can be very valuable in a safe rather then lose or risk having them stolen," he said.

"It would be wonderful to be able to help get these medals back to their rightful owner."

If you can help police reunite these items with their rightful owners please call Lismore Police on 02 6626 0599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with Police reference is E69133637.
