Family favourite wins five-star rating

RUMBA Resort and Spa has just become Caloundra’s first five-star accommodation house. And now general manager Bill Darby aims to take the family-favourite coastal destination to the world.

At a media lunch last Friday, Mr Darby said the AAA accreditation would help increase visitors to the area, rather than take a slice of the current market dominated by three and four-star establishments.

He said that, combined with the $8.5million Bulcock Beach boardwalk renovations and recently created Waterfront Precinct, the resort’s five-star rating offered the opportunity to enter the international markets and attract inbound tourism to Caloundra as a destination.

While Caloundra was popular domestically, the area needed to be promoted to overseas visitors as the “traditional Australian beach holiday experience”.

The Gold Coast had lost that quintessential family holiday feel, but Caloundra still had it, he said, describing the town as a “sleeping giant” with “more to this area than what we’ve traditionally understood it to offer”.

Until now, Caloundra had not been on the radar for Inbound Tourism Operators, he said, but “we’re starting those introductions”.

Mr Darby acknowledged that his vision for Caloundra was long-term and required word-of-mouth promotion to succeed, but he believed “clever, progressive” ITOs from areas such as Germany and England were always on the look-out for new opportunities for their clients.

A walk-through Rumba Resort and apartment inspection confirm why the five stars are well-deserved.

Apartments feature ducted air-conditioning, DeLonghi espresso machines, HD home theatre system with pay-TV plus the latest in on-demand movies with prologic sound.

Rooms overlook Pumicestone Passage towards the northern tip of Bribie Island, and apartment balconies take in views of the main pool, heated pool, the cocktail bar and outdoor jacuzzi.

They are also smart-wired.

The hi-tech experience starts at the front door with entry via radio-frequency ID cards. Inside, low-energy lighting is controlled by iControl smart wiring. Lights are dimmable and there’s even a “good night” button.
