Families opt to take holiday home
HENRY van den Berg and his family are part of a resurgence of people opting to bring their dwellings with them when they go on holidays.
The van den Bergs are camping out in Toowoomba this week as a part of their journey around Australia.
An online survey suggests a 31 per cent rise in camp and caravan site bookings has taken place in Australia in the last 12 months with Queensland being one of the most popular destinations.
Toowoomba Motor Village assistant manager Barb Howard said camp sites and caravan sites were now booked out year round.
“We used to have a lull period around this time of year, but not any more,” Mrs Howard said.
“I think it is a cheaper option, especially for young families.”
Business has also been good at Tentworld Toowoomba where manager Pete Falknau has seen a lot of families come in to get themselves set up for camping.
“The average families that might usually go on a holiday to the coast have all of a sudden decided that instead of spending three to four thousand dollars on a holiday, they would rather set themselves up with a good camping package for under $1000,” Mr Falknau said.
“People don't have to rough it any more.”
Toowoomba's caravanning clubs are also busy, with membership to Toowoomba and Golden West Caravan Club at capacity and Downs Wanderers Caravan Club also enjoying healthy membership.Getting a full camping set-up
