Facing risk of diabetes

ABOUT 280 Australians will develop diabetes today - Australia's fastest growing chronic medical condition.

Coinciding with National Diabetes Week, St Vincent's Private Hospital is holding free blood glucose tests next Tuesdayfrom 9-11am to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes.

St Vincent's chief executive Steve Brierley said information on preventing and managing diabetes will also be available.

"Diabetes Australia says that 1.7 million Australians have diabetes but one of the main concerns is that up to half of the cases of type 2 diabetes remain undiagnosed," he said.

"Up to 58% of cases of type 2 can be prevented, according to Diabetes Australia and we know that good blood glucose management and living a healthy lifestyle can significantly improve the difficulties associated with diabetes."

Those interested can access the hospital through its Avondale Ave entrance.
