Facebook, Twitter hit by outages in Australia

FACEBOOK has crashed across Australia, New Zealand and south-east Asia.

The Aussie Outages page reports the  social media giant went down about 11.16am.

"Down in townsville.QLD..... oh god! The apocalypse is here! How do I even talk to someone face to face!!!!,'' one person posted.

About an hour later, Twittter also appeared to be having problems.

Some speculated the social media companies may have been targeted by hackers.

Others suggested Twitter might have been crashed by all the Facebook users reporting #Facebookdown, which was the top trending term at lunchtime.

Earlier, there were more than 8000 complaints about Facebook being down on the AussieOutages page.

Outages were reported across Queensland and even as far away as New Zealand and Malaysia.

According to website downdetector.com, Facebook went down in large parts of Australia, Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand.

About 11am, the website recorded a huge spike in outage reports with 43% of complainants reporting a total blackout, 37% reporting log in problems and 19% reporting picture issues.

An 'error' message is appearing for thousands of users stating: 'Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can.'

Frustrated users have taken to other social media platforms to voice their frustrations with users commenting from all over the world and calling out Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg.

"Damn better get on Facebook to spread the news Facebook is down... Wait... Facebook is down... Yay I'm free, free as a bee!,'' one liberated social media user wrote.

The outage appeared to be shortlived, however, with services coming back about 11.48am across Australia.

Julie posted: "Facebook is back up!!!!!!!!! ok now you can all post what you`ll eat for lunch ;) LOL"

But one user posted that the outage dramas may not be over with the social media page reporting problems in the United States.
