Exploding phone triggers backpackers evacuation

BACKPACKERS have been evacuated from an East Bundaberg hostel, with a phone understood to have triggered the emergency situation.

Firefighters were called to the East Bundaberg Backpackers on Princess St shortly before 4.30am today after a report that smoke had been detected in the building.

Thankfully the explosion did not lead to a fire, but the backpackers were evacuated as a precaution until fireys deemed it was safe for them to return.
