Expensive toy earns dad $800 fine

ZAK THOMPSON’S ‘pocket rocket’ became an expensive toy after the pint-sized two-wheeler cost him $800 in fines in Lismore Local Court.

Thompson, 21, a single dad from Goonellabah, pleaded guilty to driving on a road without a licence; riding an uninsured and unregistered motorcycle; and not wearing a helmet on November 19.

Police stopped the rider during Operation Southtracks when they saw him riding along Jubilee Avenue at 4.30pm on a 125cc ‘pocket rocket’ style motorcycle without a helmet.

Thompson told police he had just bought the motor- cycle and was taking it for a test ride. Officers seized the bike and are seeking for it to be forfeited to the Crown.

Thompson told the court he should not have done what he did and had nothing else to say on the matter.

Magistrate Nicholas Reimer responded telling Thompson that, being a single parent, he should not have bought ‘a useless piece of equipment’ such as the tiny motorbike.
