Expect Labor to ban CSG – but only up here

NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson will be in Lismore today to make a "major environment policy announcement for the North Coast".

Mr Robertson will address media at Riverside Park, where it is expected the Labor Party will announce its intention to ban unconventional gas mining on the Northern Rivers if elected in March.

The Greens' Jeremy Buckingham welcomed the announcement but said the ban should include the whole of NSW.

"While the Greens welcome the Labor announcement banning unconventional gas in specific North Coast council areas, it is disappointing that Labor are making their coal seam gas policy based on cynical electoral politics rather than basic principles of protecting land, water and communities everywhere in NSW," he said.

"Greens policy is clear - we are opposed to unconventional gas everywhere."
