Exhibition shows how Mary's made

A FREE exhibition opening at Brisbane will chart how Maryborough-born Helen Lyndon Goff came to become author P.L. Travers and create the magical nanny Mary Poppins.

A first edition of the book Mary Poppins, the script for the Disney film, and spectacular costumes will be on display as part of a world exclusive exhibition at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), announced Arts Minister Rachel Nolan.

"P.L. Travers was an extraordinary Queenslander and the creator of the world's most famous nanny, Mary Poppins," Ms Nolan said.

"The exhibition explores the remarkable journey of Travers who was born Helen Lyndon Goff, from her birth in 1899 and upbringing in Maryborough to her travels to the UK, where she first put pen to paper to create one of the most enduring characters the world has ever seen.

"The exhibition includes rare items from the P.L. Travers Collection at the Mitchell Library in Sydney, including a first edition of the Mary Poppins book, letters to her illustrator, the shooting script for the Disney film and a letter from Julie Andrews.

"Also on display are several of the spectacular costumes and some behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the hit musical, as well as archival photographs of Travers, her family and their house in Maryborough."

The exhibition was developed by QPAC Museum curator Christopher Smith, with assistance from the Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW and the Mary Poppins company.

Mary and Me: Mary Poppins and her creator P.L. Travers is on display at QPAC's Tony Gould Gallery until March 17 and entry is free. For more information visit www.qpac.com.au or phone 136246.
