Ewan sprints to second stage victory of Tour Down Under

CYCLING: Caleb Ewan - labelled the fastest man at this year's Tour Down Under by world champion Peter Sagan - has again hit the afterburners when it mattered, winning stage four at Campbelltown in South Australia.

The Orica-Scott rider again found a path - and the speed he needed - to charge to a mighty victory. BORA-hansgrohe's Sagan was again second, with Team Sky's Danny van Poppel in third.

Ewan also won the opening stage of this year's race.

BMC team leader Richie Porte returned to the overall lead, however, and is clear favourite to claim his first TDU title on Sunday.

New Zealander Jack Bauer led the peloton on a long and not-so-merry chase, holding a lead until the final 3km of the race.

He could console himself with a first and a second in the intermediate sprints and a third in the King of the Mountain push.

Two other members of what was a long-standing breakaway collected some spoils too.

Aussie Cameron Meyer (UniSA) was second in the King of the Mountain climb and took a second, then first in the sprints.

Ondrej Cink of Bahrain-Merida won the King of the Mountain climb and was third in both intermediate sprints.

Bauer and Meyer shared the award for most combative rider.
