Everyone’s your friend at new CBD book shop

THERE is a book shop in Ballina where everyone is a friend.

The Friends of the Ballina Shire Libraries opened the shop in the Centre Arcade, Tamar St, last Wednesday for a three-month trial.

The shop is staffed by the Friends, and all proceeds go to buying resources for Ballina Shire's libraries.

Janelle Moss is the co-ordinator of the shop in the Ballina Shire Council-owned building.

She said the shop would replace the popular book stalls the Friends hold regularly at the Richmond Room, which have raised well over $100,000 for the libraries in 31 years.

"We thought we'd give it a go," she said of the new shop.

She said the shop would "save the backs" of volunteers who set up tables in the Richmond Room for the sales.

The stock numbers in the shop are similar to the numbers of books which could be displayed at the Richmond Room.

She said Cr Robyn Hordern put the idea to the Friends, and directed the volunteers to the right contact in council.

In thanking various people who helped get the shop set up, Janelle left her husband, Trevor, until last.

He got the shelving in the shop sorted out, using old pantries, bedside tables and a student desk.

President of the Friends of Ballina Shire Libraries, David Humphrey, in turn thanked Janelle for her efforts.

The shop is at 78 Tamar St and will be open from 10am to 2pm, Mondays to Fridays, for three months.

Council bought the building last year and has earmarked the site for more car parking in the future.

Donations of books can't be accepted at the shop. If you have books you would like to donate, take them to Ballina library.
