POLE dancing has joined the Arctic Enema and Electroshock Therapy on the obstacle list for Tough Mudder at Caloundra next month.

But this is not the kind of pole dancing that lends itself to a striptease, dim lights and the cheesy sounds of an '80s rock ballad.

Tough Mudder-style pole dancing requires upper-body strength, co-ordination and the desire to avoid falling into a pit of cold water.

"Basically you've got to cross the pit of water using a pair of poles," Tough Mudder Australian ambassador Lee Campbell said.

By Tough Mudder standards pole dancing, one of three new obstacles this year, is relatively tame.

Last year more than 24,000 people took part in the military-style course at Caloundra South, which included trudging through ice-cold water and being shocked by 10,000 volts.

Mr Campbell said the course had been changed slightly to appeal to returning "Mudders" after last year's event became one of the most successful ever.

"It's going to be the classic Tough Mudder in the sense that there's lots of mud and lots of obstacles but we've added a few things and redesigned the course," he said.

"We want to make sure that people who came last year have something new."

Those who have completed the course twice can enter Mudders Legion, which incorporates a near-vertical drop, fire and water.

Tough Mudder's Australasian general manager Jeremy Kann said that the 20km course, designed by British Special Forces, was being tweaked to make it tougher.

"Over the past 12 months designers have been hard at work preparing new challenges and surprises to test the all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and teamwork of Queensland Mudders," Mr Kann said.

"Whether it's your first or tenth event, Tough Mudder is always a challenging and rewarding experience - so gather your friends and family, and together unlock a sense of accomplishment.''

The event will take place on August 16 and 17. Registrations are open at the Tough Mudder website.
