Evans starts NRRRL season with a win

THE Evans Head Bombers kicked off the 2013 Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League season in impressive fashion, beating Casino RSM Cougars 28-24 at Evans Head.

The Bombers took full advantage of their home-ground advantage to hold a Casino side which this season has strengthened its squad.

In reserve grade, Casino proved too good and won 26-12.

Evans Head will get a good indication of its finals hopes this weekend when the Bombers take on Grafton Ghosts, who were the NRRRL premiers in 2011 and grand finalists last year.

Fletcher back

Good news for the bombers this season has been the return of hooker Brad Fletcher.

The last time Fletcher was in Bombers colours he was a prolific try-scorer on the wing.

He was named in the NRRRL team of the year in 2011 before moving to Coffs Harbour last year.

Fletcher returns to a new-look Bombers side and will likely be used as a utility player this season.

"He's bulked up a bit and we'll probably use him on a rotational basis," coach Luke Turner said.

"Brad is a pretty skilful player and it will be good to give him a crack in a position he wanted."

New Zealand players Tamuta Mataora (fullback), Edwin Tafeamali (centre) and Penoa Liupau-Auapaau (lock) also are in the Bombers line-up this year.
