Ettrick's second Casino Cup
THE small hamlet of Ettrick, near Kyogle, is home to the past two Charcoal Inn Casino Cup winners after Within Site took out the big race this year.
Gazza Shiraz won last year for Ettrick owner and breeder, Terry Jordan.
The pundits had it right this year, though, as most predicted Within Site, the joint record holder over 411 metres at Queen Elizabeth Park, would lead and be hard to beat.
This is just what occurred, and with plenty of scrimmaging behind her, Within Site had a winning break as they went into the back.
She greeted the judge 5-1/2 lengths in front of second-placed Kamikaze Magpie, with the veteran Amazing Phantom 1-1/2 lengths away third.
Within Site is owned and trained by Darryl and Susan Schafer, and was purchased from local trainer Robert Andrews for breeding purposes.
Being only 2-1/2 years of age she was kept in training, and the $15,000 first prize for this Group Three event certainly covered her purchase price.
She loves the grass circuit at Casino where she has won 10 races and the upcoming Lismore Cup may now be on the agenda for this daughter of Collision / With Integrity.
Five heats of the Westlawn Sprint were run, and with little between the finalists on times, the final this Friday should be some spectacle.
The fastest qualifier was Rapid Puzzle, which came home with a late run to clock 23.01s for Charlie Northfield.
Next best was Farmer's Image, which went straight to the front and ran 23.12s for Janice McLean.
Dellemma Solved took over down the side and ran 23.16s for Tracey Baynham, while Hi Sandy got up in the last stride to clock 23.17s for Pat Lavis.
Miss Lyndan rounded off the heat winners when she railed through on the circle to record a 3-3/4 length win in 23.23s for John Watts and Terry Jordan.
In other races, Happy Hopper returned to his 'happy hunting ground' to win the Free For All in a fast 22.85s; Our Movie Star led all the way in the distance event running 36.03s for Reg Hazelgrove; and Night Marc stormed home to land the prize for Stephen Keep in 27.75s.
To top off a good day for punters the well-fancied and well-boxed She Rose Hi scored in the last, running 27.55s for Trevor Thompson.
