England on brink of World Cup after striker makes amends

TEENAGER Marcus Rashford has made up for an early error to seal England's come-from-behind 2-1 win over Slovakia that has it on the brink World Cup qualification.

A mistake by the Manchester United striker led to Stanislav Lobotka scoring in the first three minutes at Wembley.

It was the fastest goal conceded by England in a competitive match since San Marino's goal in 1993.

The hosts fought back, however, to record an 18th straight Cup qualifying win, with Eric Dier scoring just before half-time courtesy of a Rashford corner, before Rashford then got on the scoreboard himself in the 59th minute to put England five points head of Slovakia at the top of Group F.

"We started poorly and I am happy to get a goal that kickstarted the game for us. We were in control for most of the game then," Dier said.

"We weren't aggressive enough and were two seconds behind them in every pass. The way we turned it around was positive."
