End in sight for Possum Creek work
THE Possum Creek bridge is due to be completed this month, renewing access to Friday Hut Road from the Pacific Highway north of Bangalow.
Concrete erosion in the bridge forced its closure in September 2007, and demolition of the bridge began in January 2008. Rebuilding work commenced in 2009.
Byron Shire Council’s executive manager of asset management services, Phil Holloway, said the bridge contractors had had a break over Christmas, but were completing minor works on the project.
Construction of the road approaches take place in February and are likely to take about two months to complete, depending on the weather.
Work on Possum Shoot Road, which connects the Coorabell end of Coolamon Scenic Drive with Myocum Road, was completed just before Christmas.
A section of the road slipped away in April 2008 and since then the road has been closed to through traffic.
Mr Holloway said there were still some minor works to beundertaken further up the road in coming months.
And of the shire’s thorniest road restoration problem at Lighthouse Road, Mr Holloway said the draft design had been completed and the council was in discussions regarding final design details.
“As soon as the approvals are received from National Parks and the Road Traffic Authority, the project will go to council for final approval before going out to tender,” he said.
