Bushfire warning issued with blaze out of control in NSW

A BUSHFIRE is burning out of control and threatening properties after jumping containment lines near Cessnock, NSW.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) has issued an emergency warning for areas around Leggetts Drive, Orchid Road, Whitebridge Road and Richmond Vale Road west of Newcastle.

The blaze, fuelled by powerful winds, is rapidly spreading in an easterly direction with residents in those areas told to monitor conditions.

Firefighters have diverted traffic from the blaze and have tried to alert local residents.

However, the NSW RFS said the best advice would be for people to get to cover.

"It is unlikely at this stage we will have a crew with every single house so again, that advice to people is to shelter as that fire approaches," NSW RFS's Ben Shepherd told ABC News
