Emergency services unwind with social bowls
MID-Richmond emergency services responded well to a change of pace last Sunday, gathering at the Evans Head Bowls Club for a bit of social competition.
Snr Const Peter Richardson from Evans Head said the popular day brought all the emergency services together for a pleasant bonding session, instead of the usual harried get-together when something goes wrong.
Professionals like paramedics, police, firefighters and RAAF mixed socially with volunteers from the Rural Fire Service, SES, surf lifesaving, and marine rescue.
Evans Head firefighter and professional lifesaver John Plenkovich was awarded a special citation for his lone rescue of a mother and daughter at Chinamen's Beach last December, co-ordinated by off-duty Snr Const Peter Richardson.
In the incident Mr Plenkovich, also off-duty, responded to the call-out quickly and swam "a considerable distance" to save the daughter and her totally exhausted mother. Without his effort, and that of Snr Const Peter Richardson, both swimmers' lives may have been lost.
