Elderly man, 78, on firearm charges after police search

A TUCKOMBIL man will face Ballina court next month after police attached to the State Crime Command seized guns, ammunition and cannabis in a raid on Wednesday.

As part of an ongoing investigation, shortly after 7.30am detectives from the State Crime Command Firearms and Organised Crime Squad searched a property in Tuckombil Rd.

"During the search warrant, police allegedly located and seized seven rifles and one shotgun," a State Crime Command spokesman said.

"The shotgun and one of the rifles were self-loading, making them prohibited under the Firearms Act."

"As well as the firearms, officers also allegedly located a large quantity of ammunition, fireworks and 11 grams of cannabis during their search of the property."

The spokesman said a 78-year-old resident was arrested and taken to Ballina police station.

"He was charged with unauthorised possession of firearms in aggravated circumstances, not keeping firearms safely, acquisition and possession of ammunition and possession of a prohibited drug."

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Ballina Local Court in February.

Anyone with any information on crime or illegal activity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
