LETTER: What's happening with the shark barrier?

It's now April 2016.

I vaguely remember watching the Ballina Mayor on television some six months ago, excitedly promoting an 'Eco Shark Barrier'.

The Econet was to be installed along the entire length of Lighthouse Beach.

From memory it was originally supposed to be installed and operating before Christmas 2015, before being pushed back to early 2016 and the last I heard was late February.

What the bloody hell has happened? My understanding was the materials have been purchased and a considerable amount of money has already been spent on the project.

Now lets not turn this into a shark debate, I simply want to know how much was spent and if the Econet will or won't be installed.

I have heard all kinds of rumours, the latest that the creator or the nets has taken off back to Western Australia.

This lack of action is totally unacceptable if we, the tax payers are footing the bill.
