Eat the best of British

IF THERE is an excuse for Alessandro Matricardi to have a Yorkshire pudding, he will find it.

Born in England, he moved to Australia about nine years ago and is now part owner of the Quattro restaurants in Lennox Head and Alstonville.

But there are some things he still misses about his home country.

"It's Yorkshire puddings and my mum, in that order," he joked.

The birth of Prince George has given Mr Matricardi and his Quattro business partners - his wife Joanna and Paul and Angel Isaac - the perfect excuse for Yorkshire puddings and a lot more traditional British fare.

They will transform the menu at Quattro Lennox Head on Tuesday for the Great British Cook Off.

Entrees include a prawn cocktail; homemade duck liver pate; or leek, potato and Somerset Stilton soup.

That will be followed by rare roast Black Angus beef; Yorkshire pudding and horseradish; or Cornish fisherman's pie with roast potatoes and wood-fired vegetables.

While British food sometimes gets a bad reputation, Mr Matricardi has assured diners these meals will be cooked to perfection.

"There'll be none of mum's soggy carrots," he said.

"We're doing this in honour of Prince George, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William - we're wetting the baby's head.

"There'll be plenty of British beers as well."

Mr Isaac - who was also born in England - is in charge of putting together a Pommy soundtrack for the evening.

So far the Sex Pistols, the Beatles and Oasis are on the list.

The inclusion of the soundtrack from the much-loved soap opera, Coronation Street is still being debated.

Mr Matricardi said the Great British Cook Off would be fun, cheesy and old school.

"We want to bring a little bit of England to Lennox Head," he said.

"Half of us here at Quattro are British, so we felt a bit homesick with all the talk of baby Prince George.

"There's not a lot to get excited about in England, but a royal baby is definitely something to celebrate."

The Great British Cook Off is not just for Poms; it's open to everyone.

And don't worry - Mr Matricardi and Mr Isaac have promised not to mention The Ashes.
