Early North Coast booth counts look positive for the Greens

EARLY polling booth counts are looking good for The Greens on the North Coast, the party's longest-serving MP said.

Dr John Kaye has been fielding calls from Lismore and Ballina all day while running his own campaign in Sydney.

With only a few minutes left before voting closed, he said it would come down to the wire.

"We're hearing good things from the North Coast," he said.

"There has been a very strong response from our workers on the polling booths.

"But it was always going to be a tight race.

"The National Party has done everything it can to antagonise the communities by ignoring their need for protection from the march of coal seam gas.

"This is the one opportunity to make a change."

Greens candidate Adam Guise was picked as the party's most likely North Coast success story as he pitted himself against Labor's Isaac Smith and National Party incumbent Thomas George in Lismore.

Mr George told ABC it was the toughest campaign he had experienced in his 16-year stint in parliament.

"It's been totally focused on destroying not only the National Party but me as a person, and I have tried to handle all the pressure of that," he said.

Ballina is expected to come down to the wire, following the retirement of MP Don Page after 27 years in parliament.

"There's no guarantees on this seat… I think tonight is going to be very close... this is a tight contest," he told The Northern Star.

Greens candidate for Ballina Tamara Smith said it was a three-horse race, although early polls suggested the real battle would be between the Nationals' Kris Beavis and Paul Spooner for Labor.
