Durkin delivers hat-trick as Lennox Head downs SCU

MAT Durkin dominated in front of goals as Lennox Head downed an understrength SCU 9-3 in their Far North Coast Water Polo match at Alstonville on Monday night.

Durkin scored two goals in the opening term as the in-form Lennox Head raced out to a 3-0 lead by the first break.

SCU, forced to take to the pool two players short, stepped it up in the second term and matched Lennox Head with two goals to trail 5-2 at half-time.

Lennox Head however increased the pressure after the break and by the time Durkin added his last goal, Lennox had run away with the game.

All three SCU goals were scored by teenager Joel Stone.

In the other men's match played Monday night, Daniel Bills produced an impressive five-goal effort as Alstonville A2 took on Lismore Workers.

Alstonville A2 started strongly with four quick goals but Lismore improved their defensive efforts in the second term to trail only 6-2 at the half-time break.

A lack of substitutes appeared to take a toll on Alstonville in the second half as Lismore began to launch a comeback.

But their hopes were dashed as lightning forced an early end to the encounter.

The storms also meant the game between Alstonville A and Alstonville B was cancelled.

In the women's competition, the two Alstonville teams met in a top-of-the-table clash.

Both teams were strong in defence and their offensive plays were well crafted.

So tight was the contest that at the end of the match the scoreboard was locked up at 6-all.
