Robbers set the record straight

ANTHONY Prince had a feeling those pictures of him and his mate Luke Carroll doing gangsta poses with stolen money would come back to haunt him.

Five years after the pair earned the tag ‘dumb and dumber’ for their amateurish robbery of a bank at the ski town of Vail, Colorado, Prince is back home at Byron Bay and has told the ABC’s Australian Story he is trying to move on from the teenage stupidity that put he and Carroll into the bank.

In the program, which aired on Monday night, Prince acknowledged the hurt he had caused his family and the tellers he had robbed, and tried to explain the thinking that led to the robbery.

“When I was 19, I thought I was Superman,” Prince said. “Why is that? Is it because mum and dad have been picking up my s..t since I was a little boy? I thought I would do this and it will all work itself out.”

Prince also explained those infamous photos he and Carroll took of each other holding their stolen loot, saying they had too much cash to pass through customs on the flight they wanted to catch to Mexico.

The pair, who Prince described as ‘two young Aussie larrikins out for a good time’ gave $20,000 to a taxi driver; Prince tried to buy a Rolex watch with $5 notes; they tried mailing some of it home from a post office. In the end, they decided they had to chuck it.

A friend of Prince and Carroll’s, Rashid Habib, told the program Prince did not mind the ‘dumb and dumber’ tag the pair had been labelled with, believing it showed they had been ‘just two stupid kids’.

“They can’t really complain about any dumb and dumber talk – they were pretty dumb,” he said.
