Plastic ducks preparing for Great Duck Race to help charity

THIS 21st birthday will be a quacker.

The Rotary Club of Ballina's 21st annual Great Duck Race will be held in the Richmond River in front of Fawcett Park, Ballina, on Sunday, October 6 at noon.

Punters can get on board one of the plastic ducks - well, back them at least - by paying $2.

The ducks will race along a course between 50-100m in the river, and the "owner" of the winning duck will win $250, with second place earning $200 and third prize being $100.

They'll float with the tide, but the wind could hold them up.

Australian Seabird Rescue volunteers, who are used to rescuing injured birds, will help keep the ducks on course and pick them up after the race is over.

John Gallagher is supporting the event by providing a fishing boat to drop the ducks from to start the race.

Proceeds of the Great Duck Race will go to local community groups and Rotary projects.
