Drunk mum assaults Coast cabbie in front of her kids

A DRUNK mother celebrating her birthday punched a taxi driver in front of her children because she couldn't afford the fare.

In the early hours of the morning on October 9, 2016 Nicholle Shay Drovandi, her two teenage children and a friend piled into a taxi to return home to Bli Bli.

Once they arrived an argument broke out between Drovandi and the 61-year-old taxi driver over the fare and he threatened to report her for fare evasion.

Drovandi then punched the man to the upper left side of the head - which caused his glasses to break - before paying the remaining $15 and getting out of the car.

Police identified her through security footage in the cab, but didn't arrest her until March.

She pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday to a single count of serious assault of a person over 60 which carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison.

The court heard Drovandi had been the second person to assault the taxi driver during his tenure and the incident had caused him so much anxiety he was forced to quit.

The man was working on the side as a driver to fund his retirement, but decided his "health and wellbeing" had to come first.

Drovandi's lawyer said his client had asked the cabbie to let them out further down the road as she didn't have enough money, but he refused - not wanting to let the group walk in the dark.

When they arrived he wanted the full fare, but Drovandi couldn't produce it.

Magistrate Ron Madsen said the assault surely had a "lasting impact" on Drovandi's victim and sentenced her to six months' imprisonment with immediate parole and ordered her to pay $200 for the broken glasses.
