Drunk driver crashes into front yard

A MAN who lost control of his car before he smashed through a fence and ended up in the front yard of a Ballina house has been charged with high range drink-driving.

About 5.30pm yesterday police allege a white Hyundai excel was travelling north on Martin St, Ballina, when the 53-year-old driver lost control of the car as he approached a roundabout at the intersection of Bentnick St.

Police said the man continued through the roundabout, mounted the curb and smashed through the front fence of a house on the corner of Martin and Bentnick Sts.

A witness called police who rushed to the scene and removed the man through the car's passenger side door.

Police allege the man was visibly affected by alcohol.

He was attended to by paramedics before being taken to Ballina police station where he was breath tested which returned a positive reading.

The man's licence was immediately suspended and he was charged with high range drink-driving.
