Drug investigation targets police

A POLICE Integrity Commission investigation into allegations of drug taking and supply of drugs by serving and former NSW Police officers is under way, Parliament has been told.

Part of the investigation may centre on the Tweed Local Area Command, according to police sources.

The terms of reference for the operation code-named Ischia were revealed this week when the commission tabled its annual report in Parliament.

The report said the investigation was also examining allegations relating to the "release of confidential police information and issues relating to the NSW Police Force medical discharge system".

The operation came after two NSW Police officers and one Federal Police officer tested positive to drugs, including cocaine, after attending a non-official police function in Sydney in August.

One of the officers who tested positive to illicit drugs was from the Tweed Local Area Command. He has since been stood down while investigations continue.

The commission confirmed closed hearings were under way in Sydney but refused to comment on whether the operation centred on the Tweed Local Area Command.

However, police sources have told the Northern Star officers from the commission had made several trips to the region in recent weeks and had interviewed a number of police officers about these matters.

As part of the investigation the Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission is also investigating events which took place north of Tweed Heads.

The Queensland commission has confirmed it is working with its NSW counterparts.

Police sources have said there was an expectation among officers within the Tweed Local Area Command that the commission would hold a public hearing as part of the operation and charges may be laid against officers involved.
