Drivers take water to Stanthorpe

MUM Rachael Eddy made a difference in the lives of many of the drought-stricken western Queensland families with her Water for the West fundraiser and she's gearing up to do it again - only this time, she's aiming higher.

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses in the state's south east corner, three trucks from C and K Transport carried 63,000 litres of drinking water out to Granite Belt Fruit Freighters, 10km north of Stanthorpe despite the raging bush fires in the region on September 7.

The water was distributed to families in need by the Tenterfield Rotary Club.

Rachael, a full-time stay at home mum and Pretty Mint Creations owner from Jimboomba, said she was surprised about how quickly people banded together to help out, after only putting the call out less than a week before delivery.

"The idea was to get enough water to fill a truck. Coming from a trucking family it only seemed fitting really. I have the contacts, why not utilise them?” she said.

"I started out just wanting one truck and 20 IBC pods of water and now we've got three trucks and 60 pods full of water.”

She said 37,000 litres was donated by local businesses and the remaining was purchased with money from various cash donations.

On top of that, the trucks will also transport 150 10-litre bottles of water.

"It's bad enough that farmers are losing farms and income because they've got no water, it's really expensive to fill up the tanks at the moment, but now it's trickling into households and they can't even make a cup of coffee, there's no water in the tanks and no rain water,” she said.

Now, she's trying to at least double those efforts for the next run, in conjunction with Granite Belt Drought Assist on Saturday, October 19.

If you'd like to donate, there is a drop off point at the Pacific Petroleum warehouse shed 6 at 1628 Ipswich Road, Rocklea.
