Driver in wild ride of destruction through Coffs City

A MAN is lucky to be alive after his vehicle went on a wild ride overnight that hacked a path of destruction through sleeping Coffs Harbour.

The 37-year-old man was assisting police with inquiries after allegedly losing control of the Toyota Lexus SUV he was driving.

His vehicle began its rampage by crossing two traffic lanes, a median strip, another road and a nature strip.

It then ploughed through two front yards before smashing into a house, leaving a wake of debris that witnesses said stretched back about 100 metres.

The driver had a close brush with death as the SUV came to rest.

The final impact left the vehicle entombed in the home's floor boards with a main beam going through the windscreen, narrowly missing the driver's face.

A water main was also taken out during the runaway ride.

The couple who were asleep in the house said they woke to a string of crashing sounds that ended with a thunderous bang and noticeable jolt to the house.

Their unwanted experience left them distraught and visibly shaken.

Neighbours said the house which is close to a main arterial road is in a dangerous position and safety complaints had been made.

"Authorities are yet to erect barriers and there have been multiple near misses in the past with the possibility of a fatality always there," a resident said.

The driver was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus for treatment to a head injury and police indicated blood and urine tests would be taken.

The Lexus which appears to be a write-off was understood to be owned by the man's mother.

Police and ambulance paramedics attended the scene with SES staff covering the exposed section of the house with a tarpaulin.

Inquiries into the incident are continuing
