Driver thought he’d ‘get through’ floodwaters

A LISMORE man who got stuck in floodwaters at South Lismore told police he thought he would 'get through'.

At about 12.10pm yesterday police were called to Caniaba Rd at South Lismore following reports a car was stuck in flood waters.

When police arrived at the scene a tractor was being used to remove the car from water about 1 metre deep.

Officers at the scene said the driver told them "I've lived on this road all my life."

"I'm in a four wheel drive and I didn't think it was that deep, I thought I would get through," police allege the driver said.

Police then spoke the driver about the dangers of driving in flood water and the associated factors relating to emergency rescues.

Richmond Tweed SES region community engagement coordinator Janet Pettit warned people against attempting to drive, ride or walk through floodwaters as they continue to recede.

For assistance from the SES call 132 500.
