Driver hits road running in series

TRENT Martin is hoping to extend his lead in the Lismore Workers Club Wingless Sprintcar Driver to America series with the next round at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway this Saturday night.

Martin has got his Lismore season off to a flying start after he was a main event winner at the opening meeting of the season two weeks ago. This result came soon after a runner-up finish to Kevin Willis last month in the series round feature race at Grafton Speedway.

Martin is clearly the form driver at present, but he is aware this weekend will not be easy as he contests the first long distance race of the season with the main event set at 40 laps.

"We have started the season off alright. I am pleased with the way things are going so if we can hold the opposition at bay, I am looking for another good result,” Martin said.

"It is going to be tough, but just consistency finishing in the top five in main events is what counts in the series.”

Martin currently enjoys a 55-point lead in the Driver to America tournament over Michael Butcher and also has a 65 point break over third-placed Mason Cattell in current standings.

Two of the strong contenders from last season's series Kevin Willis and David Eggins, who took out 2016-17 tournament, are placed fifth and sixth respectively in points.

Martin has picked up where he left off last season after he won the Lismore Track pointscore championship.

He remained in calculations for the 2016-17 season Driver to America air ticket until the deciding 15-lap "winner take all” shoot-out at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway after his car broke a bolt in the steering, when he held second spot to ultimate winner Eggins, and was sidelined from the final.

The current top 10 point standings in the Lismore Workers Club Driver to America series are: Trent Martin (190), Michael Butcher (135), Mason Cattell (125), Mick Reid (105), Kevin Willis (100), David Eggins (90), Matthew Wright (85), Ben Hull (80), Mick Santin (80) and Mick Gray (70).

The Wingless Sprints will be supported with racing for Street Stocks, National Four Cylinder Sedans, Junior Sedans, Lightning Sprints, Production Sedans and AMCA Nationals.

Gates open at 3pm and racing starts at 6pm.
