Dredging ban in and next to Great Barrier Reef, except ports

A NEW bill will ban dredging in and next to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area for 10 years - except within a declared port zone.

The Port Bill 2014 will declare Priority Port Development Areas at Abbot Point, Hay Point, Gladstone and Townsville and eventually Brisbane and ban dredging in and next to the GBRWHA outside PPDAs.

The bill proposes to ban dredging in and around the World Heritage Area outside PPDAs to establish new ports or to improve existing port facilities.

However, dredging will be allowed for safety reasons, to maintain navigation channels, increase reliance, maintain effective operations, or improving the port facility operations.
