A MAN has been rescued from a unit block fire in Gallagher Drive, Goonellabah overnight.

A spokesperson from NSW Fire and Rescue said just before 7pm last night they received a Triple 0 call from a man who was described as being in and out of consciousness.

The NSW Fire and Rescue Crew from Lismore arrived on the scene and found a unit block billowing smoke.

They retrieved a man in his 50s from a the bedroom of a unit on the second level of the unit block.

The fire was contained to the bedroom, the spokesperson said.

The crew from Lismore, and a NSW Fire and Rescue crew from Goonellabah battled the blaze while the man was treated for smoke inhalation by a crew from the NSW Ambulance Service.

The man was transported to hospital by ambulance.

The NSW Fire and Rescue spokesperson said the origin of the fire was unknown.

The spokesperson said the "crews did a great job".
