Dramatic high seas rescue at Broken Head

UPDATE, 5.15pm: THE Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was this afternoon tasked to a location five nautical miles off the coast from Broken Head, where a fishing vessel had been discovered overturned in the water with one person sitting on top of it.

Passing vessels that helped in the search assisted in retrieving this person while the second occupant of the vessel was also found by a vessel clinging to a floating Esky.

Both fishermen were brought ashore and were treated by paramedics at the Lance Ferris Wharf in Ballina.

Original report: A DRAMATIC high seas rescue took place off the coast of Broken Head south of Byron Bay this afternoon.

Details are still sketchy, but a boat overturned and those onboard were clinging to the upturned vessel and an Esky lid.

The chopper, nearby fishing vessels and the Ballina Jet Boat Rescue crew were all sent to assist in the rescue of the crew members.

There are reports that paramedics are treating the survivors on the wharf in Ballina as this news update goes live on our website.
