Dragons coach not looking too far into the future

RUGBY LEAGUE: Dragons coach Paul McGregor said he was focusing on the here and now despite all the attention surrounding the signing of Ben Hunt for the 2018 season.

McGregor, whose own contract runs out at the end of this season, praised Broncos half-back Hunt, who this week agreed to a reported $6 million five-year deal to join St George Illawarra.

But he said it was important to look at this coming campaign and not too far ahead.

"He's a high quality player and shown really strong character,” McGregor said of Hunt on Sky Sports Radio.

"To leave family and friends to take up a new venture shows what kind of person he is.

"Ben's got a year to play in Brissie and my focus and energy is entirely on the support of my 2017 squad.

"My best interests right now is for the 2017 team because that's who I'm coaching.”

McGregor said he was unsure whether Hunt would arrive a season early and added that decision was down to his current club.

"You'd have to talk to (Brisbane coach) Wayne (Bennett), mate,” McGregor said.
