Doo-doo guru gives key tips

GLADSTONE'S BITS Medical Centre's Dr Gaston Boulanger is describing the perfect poo to The Observer.

"It should be like a big cuban cigar," he said.

"With a pretty soft consistency...it should come out easily."

That's the ideal but no two people poo alike, Dr Boulanger said.

"You know what your normal poo is like. What's regular for someone, won't be regular for another.

"What you really have to look for are changes in your bowel habits."

Dr Boulanger gave an example.

"If you're always a morning poo-er and that changes then you should see your doctor."

That went for any change, he stressed.

And he stood by the old adage: it's better out than in.

"If you have to go, go! The longer the stool stays in the colon, the harder and more compacted it will become," Dr Boulanger said.

Pharmacist Yuri Lee said keeping hydrated was the best way to keep regular.

A healthy diet, with lots of fibre was also important, she said.
