Donati edges out Fettell

A SPLIT-second made up for more than a month of lost time in the second round of the Far North Coast Criterium Championships in Byron Bay yesterday.

Doubling as the start of the summer criterium season for the Byron Bay Cycle Club, almost 60 cyclists from the Tweed and Northern Rivers joined visitors from the Gold Coast and the UK in the first of five events to be staged by the club before May.

The series will include the McDonald’s Northern Region Criterium outing on February 14.

The Byron club will also host another round of the Far North Coast titles on January 10.

However, yesterday it was promising Australian elite pro team rider Rueben Donati who pipped triathlete Clayton Fettell in a sprint to the line in the A grade outing.

Donati made his break for the line from a big bunch, and Fettell followed suit three laps from the finish.

In the end it came down to less than a bike width, with a split second separating the pair.
