Donald Trump loses Wisconsin primary to Ted Cruz

A RESURGENT Ted Cruz has won the Wisconsin primary securing 51.4% of the vote while his rival Donald Trump locked down 32%.

And on the other side of the political fence Hilary Clinton has lost the Democratic primary to her rival Bernie Sanders, by a slim margin of of 54.6% to 45.1%.

The results throw into doubt what many had expected - a Clinton v Trump showdown at the election.

Many Republicans hoping to defeat Trump had said in the lead up to the Wisconsin primary that a Cruz win was essential to prevent the billionaire building an unassailable lead.

In his acceptance speech Cruz, a Texan Senator, said his campaign had raised more than $2 million in the wake of the win.

"We have had over 1.3 million contributions," Mr Cruz said.
