Dogs sniff out illicit drugs, pipe on block

WHEN Joan Maclennan took her dogs for a walk at her spare block of land last week, the last thing she expected to find was an ice pipe and other drug paraphernalia.

A resident of Moore Park Beach for the past six years, Mrs Maclennan had never experienced a situation like this, but conceded the area had become worse over the years.

"I used to live in a unit when I first moved here but then I met my husband and we now own a house, as well as a block of land on Moore Park Rd," she said.

"We do often see drunks pass by on the street because we live between the bowls club and pub, but this is the first time I've seen drugs being used."

The expectant mother found an ice pipe, some drug substance in a backpack, and food about halfway up the two-acre block after her dogs had alerted her to it.

"A lot of the property is fenced, and there's a lot of grass and trees in between the road and block that would provide a lot of hiding spots if needed," she said.

"I was there doing some perimeter checks; we have to get some palm trees and branches off the fence line and my dogs found it."

The discovery has MrsMaclennan and her husband questioning whether they will stay in the area.

"The amount of crime that happens here is growing and people just try to sweep it under the rug," she said.

"It used to be a nice place to raise family, but now you have to pick and choose certain areas because some of them have got a bad name now.

"It's making both my husband and I consider whether we might just sell up and leave.

"I know there's drugs everywhere, and I'm not saying it's just Moore Park Beach, but they seem to congregate here lately.

"We're having a baby shortly and we don't want to raise a family in this environment."
