Dog ‘dragging’ case by kid on bike on Facebook baseless

ROCKHAMPTON Facebook users were barking mad on Monday night as a post circulated about the alleged mistreatment of a dog in Parkhurst.

The post described a young boy dragging a dog on its belly behind his bike.

But police and RSPCA inspectors say the dog involved did not appear to be a victim of animal cruelty.

Police decided no further action was required after finding the dog uninjured.

In fact, RSPCA regional inspector David Ferrar said they wasted thousands of dollars in some cases "appeasing Facebook frenzies".

"A lot of time, effort and resources of the RSPCA are taken up investigating things that are blown out of proportion on Facebook," he said.

"Someone posts it, another one posts it, then fiction becomes fact and no one knows the real story."

While based in Mackay, Mr Ferrar has been covering Rockhampton while the local inspector is on holidays.

"It doesn't appear that there was any immediate welfare issue with the animal," he said.

"However, the local inspector will follow and investigate any necessary or appropriate action … our first concern is always for the animal.

"If people still have concerns they're welcome to contact the RSPCA hotline with further information."

About two months ago Mr Ferrar investigated an incident in Townsville where people were sharing a photo on Facebook of alleged dogfighting in the area.

It was discovered the photo was taken in the Ukraine.

With only 18 inspectors across the state, and four of those based in Brisbane, he said these viral posts took them away from the worst cases of animal neglect or abuse.

He urged people with concerns to report them to the RSPCA hotline on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) before they make comments on social media.

"Report the matter, then it can be dealt with."

Social media comments:

This makes me feel so sick... god help that kid if I was there id gladly tie him to the back of my car and drag him down tbe road see how he feels!!! Some ppl are just evil!!!

what makes this okay in any bodies mind, if he did this to my dog I would make his life hell. I am absolutely and come play and utterly disgusted!!!!

Put a collar on him and drag him behind a bike. Let's see how he likes it the little bastard!!!

Police just went there and the boy confessed to dragging the dog. The dog is going to be ok but they didn't even take it. They left it there grrr

I hope this is followed up futher regarding the young offender being allowed to keep the dog and he also needs a pshyc evaluation. Pshycopaths and murderers often start out by torturing animals

Video taping the abuse should be proof enough. If that doesn't work, I wouldn't think twice to grab it up and I'm not afraid of the consequences. Yes, thank goodness for the RSPCA but this really infuriates me.
