Does Australia need a Donald Trump of its own?

IS DONALD Trump a hero or a villain?

As the world frets about the possibility of the billionaire property magnate becoming the President of the United States, thousands of Australians aren't so concerned.

In fact, it appears some would like a Trump-style character here.

NewsCorp's Daily Telegraph in Sydney polled its readers who overwhelmingly said they were not worried about the prospect of Mr Trump becoming the leader of the free world.

That's after 32,000 people voted in the online poll.

Readers on social media have suggested we need a politician like Mr Trump to lead Australia.

One wrote:

If we had a Trump in this country then we would not have the trouble we had in Sydney and Melbourne last weekend, no more fear of taking your wife out or kids or going out with friends wondering if you will get mugged or knifed by the people your taxes help to bring here and live in freedom. If that is to PC for the brigade then stiff.

It is unclear whether the readers would consider former One National leader Pauline Hanson or mining magnate Clive Palmer as similar to Mr Trump.

Industry Minister Christopher Pyne has meanwhile said the Trump phenomenon "is a real problem for the United States, making their democracy look kind of weird".

Earlier this week, political analysts including Dr Michael Fullilove from the Lowy Institute warned a Trump presidency could be dangerous for Australia.

"He seems positively allergic to Washington's military alliances, which is a problem for a US ally such as Australia," he said.
